Musical Goals

Throughout my life I have always had a strong interest in music as well as social action and humanitarian work. As I further myself, and shape my musical goals, I am constantly making discoveries about what is important to me. Soon I will be applying to conservatories and music schools to pursue a career in performance violin. But for me, the music must have meaning beyond simply playing notes for a paycheck. There is a spiritual side of music that must be nurtured, as well. It inspires, heals, soothes and moves people in ways that nothing else can.

As early as 6th grade, I began sharing my talents by playing violin every week for my church and for many other community events. Over the years, people have often told me how much this has meant to them. This year, I became involved in an after-school mentoring program to encourage young violinists. This has given me the opportunity to give back to the same strings program that first inspired me to play.

In addition to mentoring, studying, and playing the violin, I am also in the process of composing a five-movement work for violin and piano. The piece, called The Healing Suite, was inspired by a family friend's journey with cancer. I have arranged to record this work with Pulitzer Prize nominee composer/pianist, Dan Knight. In the last several years, I have been intrigued by the many studies being done on the healing effects of music and because of this, I am going to donate a portion of the CDs to local hospitals to give to patients who might benefit from the music. The remainder of the CDs will be sold to raise money for the healing arts and to sustain the project.

In summary, my ultimate goal is to become a well-rounded violinist, have a successful career in music, and always find ways to use my musical gifts to benefit others.
