Catcher in the Rye
The Catcher in the Rye is a book by J.D. Salinger. It is about a teenage boy with a mental condition who gets kicked out of his college prep high school, and has a small set of adventures on his way home from school. The book takes place between the days of December 18 and 19 of 1949. Salinger's book has been the subject of much debate and has been banned from many libraries for the past 50 years. It is on Time magazine's list of the 100 best books in English written since 1923. However not everyone agrees that this book is premium American literature.
The Catcher in the Rye uses much profanity and talks about sex and alcohol abuse, which is the reason it is one of the top 10 most banned books. The main character has serious mental problems, which cause him to be expelled from school. This story isn't for the faint of heart. It is hard to find a real point, or direction to the story. The book is a glimpse inside the mind of a teenage boy, and follows the story line of a boy wandering around a city, looking for a way to pass the time.
The book takes place over the period of two days; however there seems to be very little direction to the plot, and the only relief at the end of the book comes from finally being rid of an annoying and somewhat disgusting character. This book is for those with nothing better to read, and the wish to get to know a character with abnormally strong “teenage angst”.
